"Because We Care" to provide teddy bears to Police Department
Remember Autumn and Paige, the two girls that bought lunch for the Altoona Police Department with their Disney money? Well, it looks like their generosity and giving has become contagious!! Their mom and some friends and family have started a project to continue giving back and making a positive impact in our communities! Check out their "Because We Care" project!!
The girls inspired their mom to make a difference in our city as well. "Because We Care" is raising funds to provide personalized teddy bears to our police officers, so they can give them to the children they encounter to provide comfort during difficult situations. The project started with the purchase of the first box of 24 bears which were given to the police department to hand out to children they encounter in their daily work to help build a positive relationship between law enforcement and children.
Every day our officers respond to calls that are traumatic and involve children. Whether it be a car accident, house fire, or cases of neglect or abuse, our officers are usually the first ones on the scene. As noted on the "Because We Care" Facebook page, "We need to be able to give our officers teddy bears, so when these things occur, they have something to give to the children to provide a sense of comfort and love when they need it the most. Trauma can happen to any child. The key, is early intervention. Our hope is that with the help of our community, being willing to donate to our cause and supporting it, that we will be able to help spread some positive light during the darkest of times with teddy bears."
The ladies behind "Because We Care" hope to be able to get enough donations to branch out to other police departments as well. If you would like to help their project you can donate through their Paypal account, at any area Reliance Bank in their name, or though check. Funding in police departments is tight and they would love to be able to do more for the children of our area, but they can't, that's where "Because We Care" helps bridge the gap.
Other ways you can help are coming up in the near future. "Because We Care" will be holding a hoagie fundraiser starting in November with the help of "Helping Hands" in Huntingdon. A portion of each hoagie sale will go toward the "Because We Care" project which will allow the purchase more bears. Watch for more details!!
